Jimmy Chism Jr. Obituary

Jimmy Wayne Chism, Jr., lovingly known as JJ, was born on March 25, 1971, in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, to Jimmy Chism, Sr. and Wilma Dean Chism. He passed away peacefully at his home in Pearland, Texas, on September 16, 2025.

JJ was a proud graduate of Daingerfield High School, Class of 1989. A standout athlete, he was named First Team All-State Linebacker in 1988 and wore his #49 jersey with pride. He continued his football career at Kilgore Junior College, playing for the Kilgore Rangers until an injury prevented him from continuing.

From a young age, JJ understood the value of hard work, thanks in large part to the example set by his grandfather, R.C. Williams. As a teenager, he took pride in his first job mowing local graveyards, happy to earn his own money. In 1990, he worked as a floorman at Pilgrim’s Pride in Mt. Pleasant before moving on to Lone Star Steel, where he worked as a Tester Operator for 16 years.

On November 11, 2005, JJ’s life was forever changed by an ATV accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite the challenges, JJ’s resilience and strength shone through. He underwent extensive rehabilitation, regained his independence, and amazed many by walking again on his own.

During his recovery, JJ became an active and beloved participant in several adult care programs, including Best Friends of Longview, TX, Bradford House Assisted Living of Gilmer,TX, and Lula’s Place of Pearland, TX. He formed lasting bonds with staff, drivers, caregivers, and fellow participants who supported and loved him deeply.

JJ’s greatest role in life was being a father. His pride and joy was his daughter, Jaiden, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. Jaiden never saw her father as someone with a disability—she simply saw the man she loved and admired. Even at the young age of seven, she showed remarkable strength and devotion, once pushing her father through their home when he couldn’t do it himself. Their relationship was built on love, resilience, and mutual respect, and it remained one of the most meaningful parts of JJ’s life.

JJ began his faith journey at Mt. Mitchell Church of Christ. He later attended Oak Grove Church of Christ. While living at the Bradford House assisted living facility, Minister Bro. Venters faithfully picked him up and brought him to worship at Main Street Church of Christ in Gladewater, Texas. After relocating to Pearland, JJ became a member of Pearland West Church of Christ, where he remained an active member until his passing.

In 2023, JJ was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. He fought courageously through the pain and suffering, never losing his spirit. Before he passed, he shared a message for everyone: he wanted people to be happy for him, and to know that he is no longer in pain.

JJ was truly the heart of his community. He gave generously, loved fiercely, and never expected anything in return. Known for his outgoing personality, daring spirit, and zest for life, JJ will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents Jimmy Chism, Sr. and Wilma Dean Chism. Sisters Pam Chism and Chandra Evans and Special Uncle William Paul Chism.
